Multiple Locations
Seasoned shutterbug Josie Chu helms digital-photography workshops at libraries around the city, sharing her image-capturing wisdom with up to 12 pupils at a time. The three-hour courses range in subject matter, from a beginner’s photography crash course that introduces nascent shooters to the basic functions of their DSLR cameras via tutorials and icebreaker games to a Yummy Mummy class that teaches mothers how to compose, light, and print keepsake shots of their progeny. Students should bring fully charged camera batteries, empty memory cards, and their cameras’ manuals to the workshops. Click here for class times and locations.
Dressed in his favourite play outfit, the curly-haired boy stares mischievously into the camera in front of him. As his mouth opens into a broad grin showing off his newly sprouted teeth, Josie Chu quickly snaps a shot, preserving the impish smile for eternity on her memory card. This candid, relaxed approach to photography is a reflection of Josie’s belief that all photos should not only showcase the subject’s personality but also evoke a wealth of emotions in the stories they tell, from a quiet moment between newlyweds to a laugh shared by a family and their newly adopted sasquatch.
Nurturing her artistic passions since the age of 2, Josie officially began her shutterbug career by earning a BFA in sculpture and photography, scooping up an MFA in photography to further hone her skills and prepare her for a life behind the camera. Josie shares her passion for her art in her capacity as a teacher of film and digital photography at the University of Calgary as well as the leader of classes and workshops around the city.
