Even Carino Japanese Bistro’s name is a blend of two different cultures, hinting at the eclectic mix of cuisine to be found on its bill of fare. Like the wormhole between Naples and Osaka, the menu unites the faraway countries of Italy and Japan in such creations as mozzarella-and-basil spring rolls, calamari fritters with yuzu zest, pesto with taro root, and veal cutlets with tempura-fried wasabi-leaf. This unusual fusion had its origins in the chefs’ preference for wine over sake; they sought to create an Asia-inspired menu that paired better with the former.
Feasts unfold under an ornate pressed-tin ceiling, with soft light flowing in from east-facing windows adorned with window coverings and chocolate-colored wood accenting the room.
