The first ski area in the Canadian Rockies, the pros at Mt. Norquay have been teaching mountain skills on the slopes since 1926. On those slopes around 2,800 people a day can comfortably ski the 190 acres, but you never know who might sit next to you on those lifts. Maybe a novice skier who just finished a few lessons. Maybe a seasoned pro ready to seize one of the more than dozen black diamonds buried in the bedrock.
Navigating this winter wonderland is the expertise of Mt. Norquay’s experienced mountain hosts. Twice a day, they lead tours of the mountain and highlight its various activities, including many that go beyond skiing. They might point out hikers clad in snowshoes, or take their groups past Tube Town, where eight sliding lanes let visitors travel downhill. The hosts might even suggest snowboarders catch some air at the terrain park after renting or tuning up gear at the Cascade Lodge. With windows looking out onto the snow-covered slopes, the lodge also makes for a warm respite from the outdoors to sip specialty coffees or Après beers on tap, or grabbing a bite to eat. Then it’s back up the mountain for another adventure—and maybe a new friend.
