Lunchbox Theatre 2016/17 Season
The theatre concludes its 2016/17 season with a trio of plays mingling music and romance. Take a look at the shows scheduled through May:
- The Exquisite Hour (February 13–March 4): On a summer evening, a seemingly well-adjusted bachelor finds his life forever altered when an alluring stranger materializes in his backyard to ask the question “Are you satisfied with what you know?” It’s a romantic, old-fashioned conversation piece, set in the age of the encyclopedia.
- Girl Crush (March 20–April 8): World acclaimed cabaret artist Sharron Matthews stars in the this comic and moving musical tale of heartbreak, obsessions, awe, and love featuring re-imaginings of hits from Kim Carnes, The Police, Blondie, Rick Springfield, Cyndi Lauper, and more.
- Newfoundland Mary (April 24–May 13): Culture and romance collide in Havana in this tale based on the real life events of Mary McCarthy Comez Cueto, a Canadian who spent her life in exile in her adopted homeland of Cuba, filled with an original score of Cuban music, Newfoundland jigs, and heart-warming ballads.

The name isn’t as mysterious as it might seem. In 1975 Bartley Bard, Margaret Bard, and Betty Gibb wanted to give Calgary’s workforce the chance to lose themselves in a story during their lunch hour, and so they founded Lunchbox Theatre. Four decades later, they’ve remained true to their original intent. Appealing to audiences of all ages, the company presents original one-act plays—many written by locals—to people on lunch breaks, splitting the day in half with a well-timed chuckle or catchy song. And hammering home the experience is the informal atmosphere, which allows audience members to actually eat their lunch or to simply sit back and wonder if their neighbor might share some pretzels if they asked nicely.
